Refurbishment Project
Salisbury Crematorium
Client: Salisbury City Council
Approximate value: £2.6M
Salisbury Crematorium in Wiltshire is a Grade II Listed Building constructed in 1960 and handles circa 1200 cremations annually.
Rose Project Management was appointed in 2010 to carry out a full Feasibility Study of the various options available to Salisbury City Council not only to replace the Cremation equipment and abate emissions, but also to deliver significant improvements in both staff and public areas.
Rose Project Management worked closely with English Heritage and Wiltshire County Council Conservation department to ensure that the proposals although significant, did not negatively impact upon the building's Listed status.
The Waiting Room and Crematory, while adequately sized at the time of the Building's construction, were no longer large enough to accommodate present day demands and the car-park also suffered from a shortage of space owing to increased vehicle ownership/usage since the site was originally developed.
Rose Project Management led and managed all aspects of the Procurement, Statutory Consent, Design Development and Construction phases of the Project which was successfully completed within budget and on time in January 2014.
Works included:
- Removal of the existing 2 cremators, replaced by 2 new bariatric cremators and a double abatement system
- 65% of the building was demolished to allow the facilities to be re-sized and remodelled to meet modern operational requirements
- The creation of a new dedicated Reception Entrance , Waiting Room, Office Space, Staff Kitchen and Training Facilities
- Landscape remodelling to develop2 new car-parks, increasing parking capacity by 50% and achieve Equality compliant access for Mourners
- Complete refurbishment of the Chapel, including the installation of a bariatric Catafalque
- Improvements to Crematorium operations through increased space and dedicated Ash-processing facilities
- Salisbury City Council retained Cremation capability throughout (some services were held off site during works to the public areas)
